Wateryell Cachaça
Not that it's an exciting event or
tale, but it's worthwhile telling this story because it happened
on the far-off day when the moniker "wateryell"
became permanently attached to Quincas's name. He had walked
into Lopez's shop, a stall on the outskirts of the market
owned by a simpatico Spaniard. Being a steady customer, Quincas
felt free to help himself without the salesclerk's assistance.
On the counter he saw a bottle brimming with crystal-clear
cachaça, transparent, perfect. He filled a glass, spat
to clear his mouth, and downed it in one go. Right then, an
inhuman yell shot through the placid market morning, shaking
Lacerda Elevator right down to its deep foundations. It was
the cry of a wounded animal, of a man betrayed and dishonored:
- Waaaaaater!
